Yzerfontein Social Tennis Club

Winter Update

Our club helps look after the municipal courts, and our aim is simple: to keep tennis a regular, enjoyable activity right here in Yzerfontein. Like many small clubs, we run entirely thanks to the efforts of our volunteers.

Most of our play is social - especially on Saturdays - but the courts are available all week if you fancy a game. We're focused on keeping things simple and easy to manage, ensuring tennis remains fun, accessible, and a part of our town for years to come.

We'd Love Your Input

As the new committee settles in, we'd really like to hear from you. What do you value most about the club? What could be improved? Where should we focus our efforts next?

To help us, we've put together a short online survey. It takes no more than 15 minutes and covers topics like club management, communication, court use, and social events. Your feedback will help us make good decisions, and we'd truly appreciate your thoughts.

Staying Connected

We've made a few updates to improve how we share information. The club's new website, https://yzerfonteintennis.co.za, has the latest details on social tennis times, booking info, membership fees, and club news.

We've also moved our communication to a WhatsApp Community, with separate channels for members, social tennis updates, and general questions. This should make it easier to stay informed, and also gives guests and visitors a simple way to get involved or book a court.

If you're looking to spend more time on court, social tennis is a great place to start. It's a regular part of club life, open to everyone, with a R60 fee for non-members. Sessions are relaxed and welcoming, and often well attended. If the weather looks uncertain, you can check the social tennis channel on WhatsApp for the latest updates.

We're also looking forward to gathering off the courts. On Saturday, July 13th, from 5 PM onwards, we'll be watching the Wimbledon Final at the main club bar. Whether you play regularly or just enjoy the sport, all are welcome.

Looking After Our Resurfaced Courts

A major milestone for the club was reached last month with the reopening of the resurfaced courts. This long-awaited upgrade, completed under the guidance of the previous committee and in collaboration with the municipality and YSRC, has made a big difference to the playing experience. It's a real improvement to our facilities and something we can be proud of.

With more people playing and the courts newly resurfaced, it's a good time to talk about how we can all help look after them. Keeping the surface in good condition means avoiding play when it's damp or covered in sand. Both can cause long-term damage, especially while the courts are still settling, and increase the risk of slipping.

To help with this, Faan and a group of volunteers recently installed a sand barrier along the edges to cut down on the debris that often blows onto the surface.

Additionally, we’ve placed brooms and squeegees next to the courts. Please use them to clear away any sand or standing water before you play. A quick sweep makes a big difference in keeping the surface safe and helping it last.

One spot to be especially mindful of is behind the baseline on Court 1. The wall and nearby tree keep that patch in shade, and it dries much more slowly than the rest of the court. We’ve spoken to the contractor and plan to repair it in spring or early summer, once the weather improves. In the meantime, please take extra care in that area. Even when the rest of the court feels dry, that patch can still be slippery.

Thanks for reading and for your continued support through the YSRC. Whether you’re a regular on court or just interested in what’s happening at the tennis club, we’d love to see you down at the courts or at one of our events soon.
